While the precise origins of glass fusing techniques are not known with certainty, there is archeological evidence that the Egyptians were familiar with rudimentary techniques ca. 2000 BCE. Although this date is generally accepted by all researchers, some historians argue that the earliest fusing techniques were first developed by the Romans, who were much more prolific glassworkers. Fusing was the primary method of making small glass objects for approximately 2,000 years, until the development of the glass blowpipe.
Each piece of the coloured inclusions has been individually made by hand with slight variations in size, shape, colours and texture due to the organic nature of glass. Several pieces of coloured glass are hand cut into shape and stacked, placed into a kiln and fused together at high temperatures as high as 815º C (1500º F). Once the desired effect has been achieved at the maximum desired temperature, the kiln temperature will be brought down to avoid devitrification. It is then allowed to cool slowly over a specified time, soaking at specified temperature ranges which are essential to the annealing process. This takes place normally for a period of 10-12 hours in 3 stages. The exact combinations of glass, temperature and placement within the kiln create a different result each time. Each piece is unique in its final form and finish; therefore, no two pieces will ever be duplicated.
When reheated, these stack-fused pieces are now fused onto a blown, black bubble on the blowpipe, encased with clear, lead-free crystal glass.
The turquoise bubble for the Incalmo rim is blown into size and the two bubbles are joined while still hot. Molten clear glass is attached and the base is formed, the bowl is blown and shaped into its unique final form and finish, never to be duplicated. Once cooled in the annealing kiln, you can feel where the two bubbles were joined together.
The bowl is engraved with its individual title and code, signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity – an investment that will appreciate in value over time.
