Glass artists Ola Höglund & Marie Simberg-Höglund are well known for their use of bold colour combinations. The Incalmo technique was developed in Venice approx. 500 years ago and has traditionally been used to create horizontal bands of colour in blown glass. The technique demands the glassblower to blow individual bubbles of coloured or cleared glass which, at a particular time, when the bubbles have been worked to the desired size, the bubbles are joined while still hot. Once the platter has cooled in the annealing kiln, you can feel where the bubbles were joined together. Incalmo is a technically complex and physically demanding technique to use. An artist must be a proficient glassblower and dedicated to the process in order to master it. Ola Höglund has adapted the reverse Incalmo technique to create vertical and diagonal bands of colour in his work. His innovative use of a traditional process results in designs that are quite unique. With the addition of vibrant colours, the artist creates a body of work with strong visual impact.
