Several intricate techniques has been used to make this unique, one-of-a-kind vase – a true collector’s treasure.

While the precise origins of glass fusing techniques are not known with certainty, there is archeological evidence that the Egyptians were familiar with rudimentary techniques ca. 2000 BCE. Although this date is generally accepted by all researchers, some historians argue that the earliest fusing techniques were first developed by the Romans, who were much more prolific glassworkers. Fusing was the primary method of making small glass objects for approximately 2,000 years, until the development of the glass blowpipe.
Each piece of the coloured inclusions has been individually made by hand with slight variations in size, shape, colours and texture due to the organic nature of glass. Several pieces of coloured glass are hand cut into shape and stacked, placed into a kiln and fused together at high temperatures as high as 815º C (1500º F). Once the desired effect has been achieved at the maximum desired temperature, the kiln temperature will be brought down to avoid devitrification. It is then allowed to cool slowly over a specified time, soaking at specified temperature ranges which are essential to the annealing process. This takes place normally for a period of 10-12 hours in 3 stages. The exact combinations of glass, temperature and placement within the kiln create a different result each time. Each piece is unique in its final form and finish; therefore, no two pieces will ever be duplicated.
When reheated, these stack-fused pieces are now fused onto a blown, orange bubble on the blowpipe, encased with clear, lead-free crystal glass.
The black bubble for the Incalmo neck is blown into size and the two bubbles are joined while still hot. The vase is blown and shaped into its unique final form and finish, never to be duplicated. Once cooled in the annealing kiln, you can feel where the two bubbles were joined together.
The vase is engraved with its individual title and code, signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity – an investment that will appreciate in value over time.

Glass artists Ola Höglund & Marie Simberg-Höglund are well known for their use of bold colour combinations. The Incalmo technique was developed in Venice approx. 500 years ago and has traditionally been used to create horizontal bands of colour in blown glass. The technique demands the glassblower to blow individual bubbles of coloured or cleared glass which, at a particular time, when the bubbles have been worked to the desired size, the bubbles are joined while still hot. Once the platter has cooled in the annealing kiln, you can feel where the bubbles were joined together. Incalmo is a technically complex and physically demanding technique to use. An artist must be a proficient glassblower and dedicated to the process in order to master it. Ola Höglund has adapted the reverse Incalmo technique to create vertical and diagonal bands of colour in his work. His innovative use of a traditional process results in designs that are quite unique. With the addition of vibrant colours, the artist creates a body of work with strong visual impact.

This vase is made in a variation of the technique, known as reverse Incalmo. It involves piercing a hole on the side of the assembled bubbles and attaching them to another blow pipe. The glassblower then gathers more glass and forms the piece into the desired shape. Incalmo is a technically complex and physically demanding technique to use. An artist must be a proficient glassblower and dedicated to the process in order to master it.
Tiny air bubbles may be trapped – frozen forever in the glass. Each piece is unique in its final form and finish; therefore, no two vases will ever be duplicated. This is what gives our glass its individual personality and is the essence and beauty of Höglund Art Glass.

The intricate blowing technique to create these stunning Incalmo Neck Vases uses handmade coloured, glass canes fused into the molten lead-free crystal glass from the glassblowing furnace. Ola Höglund is well known for the use of bold colour combinations. A technique that shows off these colour combinations in style, is the Incalmo Technique – it demands two blown bubbles of glass – one for the body and one for the neck. At a particular time, when the bubbles have been worked to the desired size, the two bubbles are joined while still hot. Once cooled in the annealing kiln, you can feel where the two bubbles were joined together.

Each Incalmo Neck Vase is individual, and unable to be repeated – “even if we tried we wouldn’t be able to duplicate them’ – this makes each one unique and each differs due to the techniques used, flow of the colours and the handmade canes. The vases are presented in a never ending range of colour combinations from blues, lilacs and greens through to red, bright lime green and bold black and white.
